I feel obligated to say something about The Visioning Process because, as the Talmud says, “Silence is akin to assent.” Let me preface my discussion by quickly reasserting a familiar theme of my previous letters: The most troubling aspect of The Visioning Process’s behavior is its intolerance of dissent. If you find that fact distressing [...]
The City Of Topeka, allow me to introduce myself. I’m one of the victims of your anti-democratic hijinks. As a note of explanation for other readers of this letter: In The City Of Topeka’s deputies, we can recognize the symptoms of decay of a slowly rotting world. As I elaborate on that concept throughout this [...]

WICHITA, Kansas, June 17, 2008 — A group of citizens are calling for a state investigation into the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s office and the Kansas Social and Rehabilitation Services after the head of SRS was recorded saying the DA’s office bullied social workers into falsifying court documents.
“In Sedgwick County often times we end up writing things because it’s what our social workers get bullied by the District Attorney’s Office into writing,” SRS Secretary Don Jordan said at a March 19th meeting. “They really have no belief in what it says.”

OK Boys and Girls, here is your chance. I am always hearing comments about how bad it sucks in Topeka. Here is a group of people who are really trying to do something about it. I know this sounds like a boring time but if you don’t show up and give your ideas then how is it ever going to change?
I had the opportunity to meet with these people and they are motivated and connected enough to get things moving in the right direction. So do me a favor and help. Even if it is just to show up and tell us your thoughts. Volunteer if you can, there is going to be a Renovation of Topeka coming out of this. Either we get involved and make Topeka the way we want it or the same old folks will keep it the way they want it. Your choice.

5/30/08 – Boobie Trap Bar – Topeka, KS.
It had been far too long since I’d seen our old friends the Klusterfux perform live. Friday night that problem was rectified at the Boobie Trap, 1417 SW 6th, with Klusterfux headlining a benefit show for the West Memphis Three with openers the Electronycs and the Runaway Sons.
I guess my first indication of the folly to come was my inability to get past their horrible name. Their name reminded me of all the terrible cover bands that used to clog up the club circuits in the 80s and into the 90s (sorry Brian). The name plays off the fact that the trio are apparently identical triplets.
I wonder if their mother went through as much pain during delivery of these three rock clods as I did listening to their set.
The three piece band, drummer, bass and guitar player traded off vocal responsibilities for what could be loosely described as 90s styled “buzz” band music with a tiny metal edge. I couldn’t distinguish between their not-so-catchy songs but I did just barely make out a Nirvana cover attempt.
Ya know, Cobain may have blown his head off in anticipation of these three.
These three guys are not without talent, they just don’t get it yet. A good live set requires a ton more practice than they’ve obviously put in, a vocalist that can sing and stay in key, much less stay in tune, and a much higher ratio of music to chatter coming through the speakers. But, they are young and still have time to work up a real live set.
I love seeing people pick up instruments and trying. I respect that. I’m also sure I won’t be able to run fast enough to get away from hearing Mirror Image again.
I am in charge of finding talent for the talent show. I need a few bands that each play a different type of music, singers, Dancers, jugglers, Magicans, Comedians, yo yo and other talents.
I only have so many spots so let me know if you are interested. There might be an audition for some talents [...]

The following is a column by Governor Kathleen Sebelius: Tobacco is costing Kansas
Tobacco use is the most preventable cause of death and disease in Kansas. One thing all Kansans can agree on is that an effort to stop young Kansans from ever smoking is a worthwhile goal.
